BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF SAN LUIS OBISPO
Bob Davis, a proud member of Realtor's Circle, has supported Big Brothers Big Sisters for many years. This vitally important program is changing lives right here on the Central Coast. Since making its first "match" in 1995 Big Brothers Big Sisters has impacted over 1,100 "Littles". Independent studies tell us children in mentoring programs are far less likely to end up in court, experiment with alcohol/drugs, or get involved in gangs. They do better in school, have better relationships with family and friends, and are becoming more productive members of their communities.
As of August, 2009, over 256 children in San Luis Obispo County are benefiting by the involvement of a mentor. Clearly this is a much needed program and every effort is being made to increase the number of children served each year. Unfortunately, there are presently 30 children who have asked for a "Big" and are waiting patiently.....some have been waiting a very long time.
It costs Big Brothers Big Sisters approximately $1,000 to establish, supervise and support a "match" for one year. When compared to the $30,000 or more it costs to maintain a child in a juvenile facility, it becomes more clear where our resources should be invested. With our assistance they can continue to hire staff to facilitate the careful selection and training of mentors, and provide the vision, training and ongoing support for the "Bigs" and "Littles" and their families.
